While Gynecomastia (enlarged male breasts) is a common condition, it is rarely talked about. Embarrassed males often limit their activities, and try to wear clothing that conceals the condition.
Male breast reduction surgery is a simple procedure which assists in the reduction of excessive glandular tissue or fat and help to create a more masculine chest contour.
Before surgery, it’s important that you have a complete checkup. Obesity, excessive use of alcohol or marijuana, impaired liver function, anabolic steroids and estrogen containing medication, as well as other medications, can all contribute to gynecomastia. If you have any of these conditions, they must be corrected before surgery. If you are overweight, you are encouraged to diet and exercise prior to the procedure.
The Procedure
Many patients with gynecomastia are able to be treated with liposuction. This depends on the laxity of the tissue, skin excess, and if there is a disc of glandular breast tissue.
The Recovery
Following the procedure, you will wear a compression pressure garment to facilitate healing. Expect swelling and bruising, which will subside in the weeks following the procedure. Scarring is generally minimal and will fade with time. It is best to avoid direct sun exposure for six months.
