One time, while on vacation with my family, another man with his family offered to take our picture in a scenic hiking spot. When I returned the favor and took a picture of his family, he asked if I could provide a “No Double Chin Guarantee” with the pictures I took for them. His wife laughed and said, “Unless she’s in plastic surgery, I don’t think that’s a reasonable request!” Her comment was too hilarious and ironic for me not to respond to, so I explained that I was indeed a physician assistant in plastic surgery. And that brings me to our blog topic for today…submental liposuction!
What’s a Submental Liposuction?
Chin liposuction or submental liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure which reduces fullness in the area under the chin and provides more definition to the jawline. This method of facial contouring can be an extremely effective ‘anti-aging’ procedure, as well as a procedure for younger patients looking for a slimmer and more defined lower face. Submental liposuction is very well tolerated and can be performed under local anesthesia with just one small incision site.

The Consultation
At your consultation, you will have an opportunity to ask questions and discuss the details of the chin liposuction procedure with Dr. Cynthia Diehl, board-certified plastic surgeon. She will examine you and determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure based on factors such as your aesthetic goals, anatomical landmarks, location of fat deposition, skin quality, and more. On procedure day, you can expect to be at our clinic for about an hour and a half. The procedure itself consists of four steps: prepping, numbing, laser, and suction.
Procedure Day
During your chin liposuction procedure, we will first analyze the treatment area and identify it with surgical markings. We will then make sure you are as comfortable as can be in our on-site procedure room! The area will be prepped and draped in a sterile fashion, and you will be taught how to use the Pro-Nox machine if desired. Pro-Nox is a 50/50 mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen which reduces anxiety, (we get it, having a procedure like this while you are awake can be anxiety provoking), and changes the way your brain senses pain. Many patients choose to use this during our local liposuction procedures for maximal comfort.
Next, you will be numbed with anesthetic fluid. Typically, only pressure is felt during this portion of the procedure. However, if anything is uncomfortable, this is the time where Pro-Nox can be very helpful! Once you are nice and numb, Dr. Diehl will gently pass the SmartLipo laser through the tissue. This laser is used to heat and damage fat cells, as well as minimize bruising by cauterizing blood vessels. Additionally, the heat energy stimulates collagen production and increases tightening of the tissue!
Finally, a special (very small) liposuction cannula will be used to suction out excess fat. After having your small incision sewn up, and your compression garment placed, you will be on your merry way!
After the Procedure
Recovery after chin liposuction is a gradual process, but many patients find it manageable with proper care. Wearing your compression garment as directed is essential to reduce swelling and support healing. Most patients can return to work within 3 to 5 days, depending on the physical demands of their job. While the most noticeable improvements happen during the first month as swelling subsides, subtle tightening and contouring will continue for several months, revealing the final results in your chin and neck.
As for scarring, chin liposuction typically involves very small incisions that are discreetly placed and heal well over time. With proper aftercare, scars often become nearly invisible, allowing you to enjoy your enhanced jawline with confidence.
Submental Liposuction FAQs
How much does a chin reduction cost?
The cost of chin reduction varies depending on factors such as the surgeon’s expertise, location, and the complexity of the procedure. On average, it can range from $3,000 to $8,000. It’s best to consult with a qualified surgeon to receive an accurate estimate tailored to your needs.
Is submental liposuction worth it?
Submental liposuction can be highly effective for individuals seeking to remove fatty tissue under the chin, resulting in a more defined jawline and slimmer appearance. Many patients find it worthwhile due to the long-lasting results and minimal recovery time compared to more invasive surgeries.
Who’s a good candidate for a double chin reduction surgery?
A good candidate for double chin reduction surgery is someone in overall good health who is bothered by excess fat or sagging skin under the chin that doesn’t improve with diet or exercise. Ideal candidates typically have good skin elasticity, which helps achieve smoother results after the procedure. However, individuals with significant skin laxity may benefit from combining the surgery with other treatments, like a neck lift, for optimal results.
Can you combine chin liposuction with other procedures?
Yes, chin liposuction is often combined with other procedures like a neck lift, chin augmentation, or facelift to enhance overall facial harmony and achieve comprehensive results. Discussing your goals with your surgeon will help determine the best combination for you.
What’s the difference between chin liposuction and a neck lift?
Chin liposuction focuses solely on removing unwanted fat under the chin to improve contour and treat double chin, while a neck lift addresses sagging or loose skin, muscle tightening, and fat removal to create a smoother, more youthful neck appearance. The procedures can complement each other depending on your specific concerns.
Is chin liposuction the same as a chin implant?
No, chin liposuction and a chin implant are two entirely different procedures. A chin implant involves placing a biocompatible implant to improve the size, shape, or projection of the chin, enhancing facial harmony. On the other hand, chin liposuction targets excess fat beneath the chin to refine the jawline. These procedures address separate aesthetic goals but can be combined for more comprehensive facial contouring.
Are there non-surgical procedures for eliminating a double chin?
Yes, non-surgical options for submental fat reduction, like Kybella (an injectable treatment that dissolves fat cells) and CoolSculpting (a fat-freezing procedure), can effectively reduce a double chin. While these methods are less invasive, they may require multiple sessions for optimal results compared to surgical options.
How long does chin lipo result last?
The results of chin liposuction can last for many years, often between 7 to 10 years or longer, depending on individual factors. Maintaining a stable weight through a healthy lifestyle is essential for preserving the outcome, as significant weight gain can cause the remaining fat cells in the area to expand. Additionally, natural aging processes, such as sagging neck skin and changes in facial contours, may gradually alter the results over time. Combining chin liposuction with good skincare and a balanced diet can help you enjoy a defined and youthful jawline for years to come.
