Are you thinking about undergoing chin liposuction to give yourself a more defined jawline and improve the appearance of your facial profile overall?
If so, you probably have a lot of questions about chin lipo before and after surgery. Indeed, having a lot of questions is great! It means that you’re really serious about undergoing this procedure and want to gather as much information as possible before moving ahead.
Below, we’ve compiled a list of the most commonly asked questions we receive about chin liposuction. These questions pertain to both the pre-surgery period and the healing or recovery period — those times when it’s important that you, the patient, are taking care of yourself properly in order to achieve optimal results from surgery.
Before and After Chin Lipo FAQs
Who is a good candidate for chin liposuction?
The best candidates for chin liposuction are individuals who have excess fat located just beneath the chin and along their neckline. Fat can accumulate in these areas due to excessive weight gain or genetics. Additionally, good candidates for chin liposuction should also be in good physical health and be non-smokers.
What’s the difference between chin lipo, a neck lift, and a chin implant?
Chin liposuction reduces excess fat from beneath the chin. Chin lipo is not a good solution for someone with poor skin elasticity or loose neck skin.
Excess skin on the neck (turkey neck), which is typically caused by aging, needs to be adjusted and smoothed with a procedure such as a neck lift. Submental liposuction that is performed on someone who has excess neck skin may actually make the loose skin worse.
Finally, a chin implant (chin augmentation) can be used if you have a receding chin. For some, the bone structure of the face results in a chin that appears pushed back. With an implant, we can correct this issue and give you a more prominent and attractive chin.
Is buccal fat removal the same as chin liposuction?
No. Buccal fat removal removes unwanted fat from the cheeks. When these fat pads are removed, the patient appears to have a thinner, more defined face with more prominent cheekbones.
Will I look younger after chin liposuction?
Many patients feel they have a more youthful appearance after chin lipo. Looking at photos, chin liposuction can indeed help to define the jawline and neckline, which helps you appear fresher, fitter, and younger.
Is chin liposuction painful?
Generally speaking, chin lipo is a simple procedure that is not painful. General anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation will help you stay comfortable.
Although the surgery comes with minimal downtime overall, there will be some discomfort during the first few days of recovery. Pain medication can be prescribed to help with this.
How long will I need to wear a compression garment after chin liposuction?
Most patients only need to wear their compression garment for around four to five days (full-time) after double chin surgery. After that, part-time wear is recommended for several more weeks.
If you have further questions concerning how long wear compression after chin lipo, be sure to ask your surgeon. They will provide you with detailed instructions concerning compression garment wear.
What will I be able to eat after chin liposuction?
Because the chin and jaw area will be sore directly following double chin removal surgery, many chin lipo patients opt to eat soft or liquid foods, such as mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, soups, smoothies, and shakes. This only needs to go on for a few days. After this, the vast majority of chin liposuction patients are able to transition to their regular diet.
At the same time, remember to avoid excess alcohol and excess sodium (salt). The former can delay healing, and the latter can increase swelling. You should also refrain from smoking for several weeks following any surgery.
What will I look like right after chin liposuction?
Directly following submental liposuction, you will have some chin liposuction bruising and swelling. These are common symptoms that are to be expected.
You will also be wearing a compression garment, which will come in the form of a headband that wraps around the top of your head and extends down beneath and around your chin and lower jawline. This must be worn for about four to five days for 23 hours per day (in most cases), and then most patients can switch to part-time wear for several weeks further.
You may also take a look at some double chin lipo before and after photos for examples of how patients may look right after surgery.
